Definition

The mixing and blending of two or more components (sometimes called ingredients) in a controlled way in order to produce a homogenous mix within defined viscosity parameters.

Often, this process is accompanied by heating or cooling so as to achieve a particular rate of chemical reaction.

Application

A typical application for mixing and blending is found in the food industry, where one or more ingredients are often batch weighed into a vessel, and then a liquid is added while rotating the vessel to form a mix.

The addition of heating or cooling is often necessary to achieve the final result, and in many cases, the torque of the mixing device and the displacement of the vessel is also measured as a input to a means of controlling the viscosity.

The list of transducers and control devices used for this application is considerable, and can include load cells, torque transducers, thermocouples, heating devices, cooling devices, LVDT's, variable frequency AC motor drivers and tachometers.

Control of the complete process can be achieved by the use of PLC's or by the use of suitable controllers, such as the Mantracourt ADW-BW in conjunction with PLC's or other Mantracourt control instrumentation.
