A customer needed to monitor the weights of a number of remote silos. Their preference was to use the analogue inputs of a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).
Under those circumstances, the distances involved kept us from using voltage-output conditioners. This was due to the resistance of the wiring, which would introduce measurement errors.
The solution was to use multiple SGA analogue conditioners configured for 4-20mA current loop output. On this occasion, this allowed them to overcome the voltage drops associated with long cable runs.
Each silo had a 350 Ohm load cell fitted in each of its four legs. Workers wired these in parallel to an SGA. This enabled them to produce an average of their outputs and provided a measurement of the weight of the silo. The SGA’s offset switches enabled operators to tare off the weight of the silo, leaving the true weight of the contents.
