Superyachts need to achieve maximum performance. The measurement of multi-directional forces between the sail and a sophisticated sail rolling mast-track system was essential to achieve this.
Custom load cells interfaced with the T24-SA strain gauge acquisition module, and the system streamed the data to a T24-SO serial output interfaced logger. This logger sat on a nearby spreader. The T24-SA modules fitted into slender sail battens. They had long custom-made antennas fitted to transmit data from each channel at 50 data samples per second.
The benefits of the wireless T24-SA system meant the project did not require 50m lead wires. Potentially, these wires would have been fouled by the damaging marine environment and by the sail furling structures. The team powered the system channels on and off over a period of 3 months. They achieved this by using the sleep/wake command on the T24-HA hand-held controller and display. This permitted the team to achieve all project objectives. Also, they could view real-time sailing loads for instant system feedback while conserving battery life when not in use.
The T24 wireless load system delivered a discrete and unobtrusive method of obtaining data once highly difficult to obtain.
